01. What is the Internet?

The Internet was originally developed for the United States military, and then became used for government, academic and commercial research and communications. It is a combination of hardware (interconnected computers) and software (protocols and languages that makes everything work). It is an infrastructure of networks on world-wide scale, and smaller networks that link to them, connecting simultaneously many types of computers.

05. What processes are involved in making my website?

1. Initial Consultation – We meet with you to discuss the main purpose of your website, your ideas, your company style, look & feel etc. We also then discuss some ideas for the planning the content of your site and possible domain names.
2. Pricing – We put together a draft plan for your website, based on the initial consultation, along with detailed pricing for your site.
3. Domain Name – We will inform you of the domain names available that were discussed in the initial consultation and upon your instruction, register the name.
4. Draft Design - A draft/sample design is prepared for your approval and discussion.
5. Resources - At this stage we will need to collect all your resources for the project.
6. Production - We then design and develop your site.
7. Publishing - Once the site is fully approved and tested, then it will be uploaded to your web host.
8. Optimisation - We can submit your site to major search engines and we will provide further advice on how to market your site.
9. Maintenance - We offer different service packages and options for on-going maintenance and updating your site.

07. How will my site be found?

Firstly, at ‘Digital Vision ' we recommend that you include your domain name on your stationary, emails and contact your customers to advise them of your new website. In addition to this, including the domain name in all sign writing for your premises and vehicles will help direct your customers to your great new site. However search engines will also play a big part in how your site is found.

08. What is a search engine?

Once your site is published to your web host then you need to ensure that others find it. A search engine is a directory where millions of company's domain names are listed along with information. The most popular search engine, Google , contains more than 3,000,000,000 websites. There are literally 1000's of search engines and directories available on the internet, some charge for you to submit your site, others offer this service free of charge. It is necessary to decide which are the most suitable for your company.

09. How does a search engine work?

When you type in a phrase or word, the engine will search its database and return results in an order that is determined by its own proprietary algorithm.

10. What is search engine optimisation?

The process of taking the steps required to rank high in the major search engines is 'search engine optimisation'. It is part of the internet marketing process and ongoing maintenance for you website. At ‘digital vision' we can advise on search engine optimisation and offer different levels of ongoing service for your company website.

11. How do search engines find their data?

Search engines use ‘spiders' to gather information from websites. The spiders almost continually crawl websites gathering data. The data they retrieve is handled differently by the different search engines, to determine the order that the sites appear in their results page (SERPS: Search engine results page).

12. I have a new site. Why isn't it in the search engines yet?

As a simplified explanation, most search engines update their databases around once a month. If a spider hasn't yet found your site, you must wait for the next crawl. It is also possible that a spider only gets to part of your site, only some pages may show. It usually takes some time until all your pages are found and then stabilise in the search engine listings. Pages appearing temporarily in the SERPS and then disappearing are common until your listing stabilises in the search engine results. Stable listings take time. As of 2004 the major engines are taking at least 2 months to add new sites to their index if they add them at all
